I have recently started putting some work into building my TikTok to promote this business. It is a great tool for marketing. But I also discovered that I can easily spend too much time watching videos and participating in other creator’s Lives. Last night, I was up late engaging with a Live of someone who is wonderful and has a bubbly energy. When I went to bed, I couldn’t sleep. My brain was on overload, overstimulated and buzzing.
There are studies about screen time before bedtime. The exposure to unnatural blue light reduces Melatonin production. I know all of this and still ignored it.
What I did to help
I realised that I needed to quiet my mind in order to sleep. Otherwise, it was going to be a very long night. I focused on the word “quiet.” I kept telling my brain, “quiet..quiet…quiet…” – softer and kinder every time. Eventually, the volume of the noise reduced. I softened some more and kept my mantra going. I kept going until there was silence and all visuals faded to black.
Meditation helps
It was quite an extraordinary experience. Through meditation practice and the awareness that my mind can be trained, I managed to control my thoughts. I soon fell asleep. I woke up with sore eyes but energised for the day ahead.
Conclusion
I recommend this practice for anyone who has a busy mind in the moments before sleep time. The world can be overstimulating – not just by social media. We are receiving information quicker than ever and our bodies are trying to process it. Try quietening your mind. It will listen to you.
